11 Tips for hiking on Table Mountain, Cape Town
Ensuring safety during a hike on Table Mountain in Cape Town is paramount due to the varied terrain and unpredictable weather.
Hiking up Table Mountain is a bucket list item of many adventurers, and taking basic safety precautions and following easy rules can help ensure a memorable experience, says Wahida Parker, the Managing Director of Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC).
According to Parker, the risks that travellers should prepare for include weather-related hazards like sudden mists, uneven pathways, getting lost, and possible encounters with snakes.
Here are essential tips to help you stay safe:
1. Plan Your Route
Research and plan your hiking route in advance. Take note of the trail difficulty, estimated duration, and any potential hazards. Stick to well-marked paths, especially if you're not familiar with the area.

2. Check Weather Conditions
Check the weather forecast before your hike and be prepared for sudden changes. Avoid hiking during storms or when adverse conditions are expected. “Weather conditions on the mountain can be erratic, with winds, rains, extreme heat and dense fogs, sometimes all on the same day. There are risks of wild bushfire during the hot summer season, and the mountain is habitat to five of SA’s most venomous snake species, so it’s crucial to watch where you’re stepping and avoid long grass,” Parker warns.
3. Inform Someone
Always inform someone about your hiking plans. Share details like your planned route, estimated duration, and expected time of return. In case of an emergency, this information can be crucial for rescue teams.
4. Hike in Groups
Hiking in a group is safer than going alone. If you're new to the area, consider joining guided hikes or hiking with experienced friends. In a group, you can provide assistance if someone gets injured or lost.
5. Carry Adequate Water and Snacks
Stay hydrated by carrying enough water, especially during warmer weather. Bring energy-boosting snacks to keep your stamina up. Dehydration and exhaustion can compromise your safety.
6. Wear Appropriate Clothing & Gear
Dress in layers suitable for the weather conditions. Wear sturdy, comfortable hiking boots with good grip to navigate the rocky terrain. Pack a waterproof jacket, even on sunny days, as weather conditions can change rapidly. Wombat Gear sunglasses and a UV protection hat is always a good idea.
7. Carry a Map and Navigation Tools
Bring a detailed map of the trails and the mountain. Familiarize yourself with the route and use a compass or GPS device to navigate if needed. Mobile phones may not always have signal coverage in remote areas.
8. Sun Protection
Table Mountain can be exposed to intense sunlight. Protect yourself from sunburn by wearing sunscreen, a hat, and Wombat Gear sunglasses (or any good quality sunnies). Consider the time of day for your hike to avoid the peak heat if possible.
9. Be Aware of Wildlife
Table Mountain is home to various wildlife, including snakes. Stay on marked paths and be cautious when stepping over rocks or vegetation. If you encounter wildlife, maintain a safe distance and avoid disturbing them.
10. Emergency Contacts
Save emergency contacts, including local authorities and park rangers, in your phone. In case of an emergency, knowing who to contact can be crucial. Save this emergency number on your fully charged phone before your hike: 086 110 6417 and Cape Town Tourism will be of assistance.
11. Know Your Limits
Be aware of your fitness level and hiking experience. Don't attempt trails that exceed your capabilities. Table Mountain offers trails suitable for various fitness levels, so choose one that matches your proficiency.
By following these safety tips, you can enhance your hiking experience on Table Mountain while minimizing risks. Always prioritize safety, be prepared, and enjoy the breathtaking views responsibly.
